BIOGRAPHY:

Askim Wisikesi was born in the small ferrochrome mining town of Mutorashanga, a remote region of Zimbabwe. Born the middle child of a creative family of five, Askim started sculpting at a very young age, and by the age of 12, he was asked to assist his brother Saidi, a skilled sculptor who taught him the basics of sculpting.  Later in his teens, Askim decided to make a full commitment to sculpting in stone and to become a professional artist himself.

As part of a newer generation of artists, Askim developed his own style by studying the works of the great masters alongside what was taught to him by his family. A strong influence to Askim is also the stylistic developments of fellow peers, notably Letwin Mugavazi. Letwin's realist influence can be seen in Askim's own interest in figurative work; the effort to tell a simple story in a simple and honest way. Much as with  "Girl With A Book," moments of contemplation are a constant theme to the artist's work.

During his spare time, Askim enjoys playing Marimba, Mbira and listening to the traditional music of Zimbabwe as he sculpts his next masterpiece. The artist considers it an honour to exhibit internationally and given his talent and skills, he is now considered a master carver and his work can be found in galleries and private collections all over the world.
